Conservatives are screaming about political correctness and the fact that people that are not Anglo say bad words about their own and other races.
What Obama said about his grandmother I took to mean she was a typical mid western woman within her demographic. Nothing more, nothing less. Not some slight dig at whites, nor an attempt to placate someone. He just made a statement of opinion.
As for the “typical” portion, shouldn’t it cut both ways? I say no. What many conservatives seem to be forgetting is several hundred years of systematic racism at the hands of those of Anglo descent. Does this mean that I should feel guilty? No. Does this mean that we owe them anything? Indeed it does. It means that we owe them a fair shake. Again, nothing more, nothing less. Anyone that thinks racism is a thing of the past is an idiot. Any white person that walks down the street at night and says they would not react differently at the sight of three approaching black teens in baggy jeans as opposed to the sight of the three white teens in Dockers is a flat out liar. Even as I, as a liberal, will call bull on that one, because I would have more aprehension at the sight of the three black youths.
Our prejudices are ingrained in us. Whether it be from your parents or from watching Cops every Saturday night. We all have preconceived notions and ideas. Again, even as a liberal I will admit that. However, the determining factor as to whether or not this incredibly stupid cycle continues is to have everyone start on a level playing feel, and to strive to realize skin tone is not indicative of intelligence or class. Let people rise or fall on their own merits.
As for the chit chat about political correctness, and segments of black society calling each other nigger, let’s keep this in perspective. The common denominator involved in the name calling is not based on racism, reverse racism, or discrimination. The common denominator is idiocy. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.

So by "person", he meant "mid western woman within her demographic".
Wow, quite a stretch.
Wow, quite a stretch.
He either meant two things, in my opinion.
1. He meant most whites have a fear of black people on the street more than if they were white.
2. He meant most old whites have a fear of black people on the street more than if they were white.

that being said, I don't think that was what he meant in the slightest.
I took to mean the same as you TFM. I grew up with a mother from the south who I remember telling my sister she couldnt date a black man, and used nigger a lot describing her childhood in the south. But she had many black friends while I was growing up (I was even a flower girl in a black couples wedding that were good friends with her).
Growing up I just chalked it up to her own ignorance, not her being racist.
And its funny after all these years, we still havent solved this race problem in America. Because the more I see of it, especially on this board, is that we cant take Obama down for being a decent human being, so lets bring him down for being black. Simple really.
Guess we really arent ready for a black president then ? Sad really...

Even Rev. Jesse Jackson once admitted hoping it wasn't a black man, and looking 'round to check, when he heard someone walking behind him.
It doesn't excuse Obama's racism, and continued support for racists.
