This is absolutely amazing. I never thought I would see the day when I would be the only person voting in favor of a tax (so far).

That being said I only approve of a home transfer tax to the extent that the government is legitimately involved in the transfer and offers some relevant value to the people they are taxing.

If the purpose of the tax is just to increase revenu then - NO!

If the city or state or whatever, legitimately protects sellers or buyers through it's actions then it should recoup the cost of offering that protection. Though I think that it would be better if people just hired a lawyer for whatever protection they wanted.

That is not a just government, nor is property secure under it, where the property which a man has in his personal safety and personal liberty, is violated by arbitrary seizures of one class of citizens for the service of the rest.

A transfer tax is set up to tax only those who presently live in an area (and usually they don't learn about it until they are moving out - then it is too late) or those who are moving into an area ( then it discourages people from moving there).

So, a tax only affects those who are coming and going whether they know it or not.

BRILLIANT!

Uh......who benefits?

Exactly. The sales tax also doesn't disrupt an already volatile housing market.

Right. It acts as a regressive tax hurting the poor the most. It hurts businesses with small profit margins - the opposite of the ones the liberals complain about. It damages the entire economy by weakening the efficiency with which products are distributed.

Whom does it benefit?

On edit: Snark wasn't directed toward you in my previous post. I'm merely fed-up with all the excuses for new and more flavors of tax.

A sales tax would benefit service businesses that compete with retail businesses.

By hurting businesses with a small prifit margin it would make competition easier for those with a large profit margin.

It would benefit those that are then not paying the land transfer tax.

And it would benefit the government who supposedly help the community with the funds but take a hefty administrative cut first.

That is not a just government, nor is property secure under it, where the property which a man has in his personal safety and personal liberty, is violated by arbitrary seizures of one class of citizens for the service of the rest.
