Why Financial reform is the only path to solve the immigration problem
There's essentially two ways to end the immigration problem.
Either prevent the immigrants from entering, or remove their desire to enter.
Dealing with the first is impractible. Not only do we not have the willpower to remove all the illegal immigrants from this nation, I do not think we could ever make it a big enough issue to rally the people behind. Besides, what would that say to the world: we care more about illegal immigrants taking our jobs, than people being massacred. The random 'evictions' or 'search and seizures' or 'fines' will never amount to enough to offset the gains that the companies get from illegal immigrants, so, it will not end.
On the other hand, if there was a distinctly national mexican economy, that provided hope for the people of that nation, and that supported them, people would be more inclined to stay in mexico. Combine this national economy, with a strong enough border patrol that could send a message, and we will have a slowdown in illegal immigrants taking our jobs. Make their entry and stay here hostile, and make their home actually better.

However, due to some factors of 'free trade' (read: nafta, cafta, NAU, etc), the national economy of america and mexico is gradually disapeering. This causes a dissolution of national boundaries, and makes borders just things on a map, than actual, meaningful things. Get rid of NAFTA, CAFTA, invest in the national economy of mexico and the rest of central America, and we will see a reduction in the amount of illegal immigrants entering this country. Any other way is stupid and you are deluding yourself that it will work on the national level.

Re: Why Financial reform is the only path to solve the immigration problem
Financial reform "sounds" real good, unfortunately Mexico is a corrupt country and always will be. It's a way of life with them. Financial reform will never work because of their corruption and their high birth rates. They will never be able to create enough decent jobs. Also the U.S. will ALWAYS have a MUCH higher standard of living then Mexico so the illegals will continue to come.

We can't control the politics in Mexico that have created an environment for corruption and malaise south of the Border. But your ideas are correct, if the economic situation were to improve to that of our own, like our Northern border, there would be far fewer people desperate enough to risk jail and death to come here.
But you premise is correct, if we remove the financial incentive to come here, they will stop coming. That incentive is to heavily fine those companies who knowingly hire illegal aliens. We also need to stop States like California from issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens. Kind of defeats the purpose of enforcement don't you think?
If we make enforcement of our existing laws a first priority, along with a reform of how Social Security cards are handed out to LEGAL aliens who stay after their visas expire, we might see some positive results regarding ILLEGAL immigration. There are many "illegal" aliens here with expired visas that have valid SS cards and drivers licenses.
The ONLY reason these people come here is because of the failures of their own political systems. However, if they find out they can't get work here, and if the legal residences here thought they would be punished for hiring them, there would no longer be an incentive to come here. We make too many excuses for illegality in this country and not enough emphasis is placed on good old enforcement. You cannot get a job in this country without TWO forms of ID and a valid SS card. How hard is it to check if a SS number is valid? How hard is it to prevent false SS numbers from entering the system?
The notion that we can build a fence around the USA to keep unwanted illegal’s out is absurd in the extreme.

Latin American countries have and probably never will be able to run themselves correctly.
