Maybe when they graduate, one of their graduation gifts they'll receive will be for services from an ACLU lawyer.

A young mind is more creative, so it seeks solutions an older one wouldn't dream of. I hate the "they are only children" argument. I believe "child" isnt refering to an age, but rather a way the mind thinks. Most pre-teens arnt "children" they are just kids. They think like adults, if not better, and arn't reconized because they are simply young and others refuse to listen to them.
We are lossing serious potential because of the intolerance of a "child" being smarter than we are. In fact, i know a lot of adults i would classify as a child due to arrogance and simple stupidity

and where is this phenomenon taking place?

Most kids I know cant even spell the name of the town we live in, I am all for education, but maybe you live in an alternate universe with a high graduation rate and no teen pregnancy or something?

I would say they make adult decisions without thinking about the whole big picture because they are children.

yes, i said half to exagerate. Your right, most kids are idiots (mostly the parents fault with genes and a failure to encourage them to do more), and CANT spell their own city.
The majority are as you see them.
But the few (i would say 1/70 or even 1/100) who do show some itellegence are far superior to adults. No they dont actually KNOW more because, well they hant lived as long and havnt done the same things. But even if they arnt that smart they are still looked down as helpless. Like this "tag" banning. The staff thinks the "children" are helpless individuals who cant settle problems themselves....which most of them are. But come on...whens the last time someone has died of being tagged?

I think the important thing, here, is that we are teaching the kids that life is about "sharing", "respecting others feelings", and "participating". Horse manure. Life is tough, and kids need to learn that competition is a very real phenomenon. They need to learn that "sharing" is nice, but at some point they need to strive and compete to WIN, because if they don't, then someone who HAS been taught these lessons will do so. The kids have to learn that it isn't just about particpating, it is about performance and competing to be the best. It's not ALL about winning and losing, but those children who NEVER compete are placed at an unfair disadvantage by those who should have taught them that competition is not only okay, it's really what drives the workplace.

This is a picture of a conservative trying to fix the economy.

It seems we are intent on raising children with no ability to know failure. By removing the concept of win and lose from games in the play ground or the ball field, they often enter their teens unprepared for the letdown they could have eased into as children.

Some of my best lessons came from failing.

It does not seem difficult to me to include the concept of competition along side the idea of civility and inclusiveness. They are not mutually exclusive ideas. They can co-exist.

The most important thing you learn from failing? To pick yourself up and try harder!

I have been coaching little league baseball for 6 years now and this was the first year we were not supposed to keep score or books. I kept a book anyway. I asked the kids if they wanted to keep score and book and they "ALL" said yes! The kids want to know what they hit, how they pitched, who made the errors and I want to know how to play a team the next time we face them. I have never seen a group of kids not want to keep score and win.

Winning is programmed in our nature and trying to overide that is futile. Whoever said "it's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game" was a moron.

I insist on good sportmanship or you sit a game.
I insist on effort or you sit an inning or two.
I insist on no cursing or you sit a game.
I insist that you never tear down another player no matter how bad he/she screws up or you sit a game. You screwed up a play too you know.

But to not try and win is pointless.

Mikey

Um... if kids were getting harassed, wouldn't it make more sense to discipline the people harassing them, and maybe say, "Don't chase people who don't want to play," rather than banning the game?

What, now if some kid decides to throw food in the cafeteria, they're going to ban lunch next?

I see two things causing this.

1. Some people don't have anything better to do, because we've figured out most of the problems involved in running a country. They're bored. Come to think of it, these adults are acting, in their court rooms and board rooms, like they should be letting the kids act on the playground. What a silly application of hypocrisy.

2. Society is extremely saturated with socialist ideas. Can't get a job? Here's a useless consolation job so you don't lose. Can't get enough money? Here's some from that other guy who could. Can't score more than the other team (faster's post)? We'll forget the idea of scoring altogether. (That's the most blatant example; redistributing the money is effectively forgetting the idea of money. If everyone had a million dollars, what would money mean?) Can't run faster than the other kid? No one may challenge anyone else to tag so no one will get humiliated. What people don't realize is that, in these arrangements, everyone loses! Remember the USSR!
