Gunman kills 1, injures 5

SEATTLE – One person is dead and five others have been injured in a shooting at the Jewish Federation at 2031 Third Ave. in downtown Seattle. One suspect has been taken into custody.

Seattle police spokesman Rich Pruitt said police are confident that only one shooter was involved.

Sources told KING 5 the suspect is a 31-year-old Pakistani man with a criminal background. He is from the Pasco but his citizenship status or how long he has lived in the United States is unknown. Also unknown is what sort of criminal record he has. Officials are on the way to the Pasco to interview his family.

According to the Seattle Times, a man got through security at the Jewish Federation and told staff members, "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel," then began shooting, according to Amy Wasser-Simpson, the vice president for planning and community services for the Jewish Federation.

FBI spokesman David Gomez said officials believe the suspect acted alone and is not affiliated with a foreign organization.

A Harborview Medical Center spokesperson said five women were brought in, and three of them are in critical condition. They have not yet been identified. Their ages are 23, 27, 29, 19 and 43. The 43-year-old woman was reportedly shot in the abdomen. Two vicitms were in satisfactory condition: a woman, who's 17 weeks pregnant who was shot in the arm and another victim with a knee injury.

A joint terrorism task force joined SWAT teams and a bomb disposal unit at the scene. The suspect's vehicle, a pickup truck, was in a nearby garage in the Bed, Bath and Beyond building, at 1930 Third Ave. Police cordoned off part of the garage before they determined there were no explosives inside the vehicle.

Police said they didn't know if all the people who were wounded were inside the building. They also don’t know how the suspect got into the building, which is said to be one of the most tightly secured buildings in Seattle. There were about 10 people inside at the time.

"Throughout the city, we have directed all our patrol officers to monitor closely all synagogues and other Jewish organizations, and we have also advised neighboring agencies in the Puget Sound area to do the same," said Nick Metz, Seattle Police Department.

At 4:03 p.m. police got a 911 call, saying one or two people had been shot. At one point the suspect himself called police and told them he had hostages.

Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up to the entrance of the building and shoot a woman in the leg. The man then walked into the building and made it up to the roof.

Witnesses said they heard one shot while the man was on the roof. The man then went back inside and witnesses said they heard several more shots.

One wounded victim was initially unable to get to an ambulance because the situation was apparently too dangerous.

Patti Simon was at work at the federation's newspaper on the first floor when she heard screaming, shots and what sounded like furniture crashing on the floor above.

"We heard this horrible screaming on the floor above us and shots," said Simon, 52, who sells advertising at the paper. "We didn't know what was happening."

Simon called up to her co-workers on the second floor, but got no answer, so she called the police and fled the building.

"People got shot, some of our co-workers," Simon said, her voice shaking. "I just got back from Israel and made it out of there a half hour before the rockets started."

Simon said the federation has security in the building.

"Somebody must have lied their way in," Simon said.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle says on its Web site that its mission is to "ensure Jewish survival and enhance the quality of Jewish life locally, in Israel and worldwide."

This past Sunday at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, thousands of people rallied in support of Israel's right to defend itself. More than 40 community organizations stepped forward to sponsor and support the event.

When told witnesses heard the suspect say he was angry at Israel, Iantha Sidell, past chairperson of the Jewish Federation Center, called the shootings a hate crime. She said: "We believe in life and it's hard to believe there will ever be peace when you're dealing with people who don't value life."

Regulary scheduled services are still going on in some synagogues in Seattle. One rabbi said people would want to be together at this difficult time.

Various sources recently cautioned temples and Jewish organizations to be on alert for dangerous activity, especially with the current Mideast violence and the coming of the Sabbath.

"This is a terrible tragedy for all of the victims and their families. Our prayers are with them today. We don't know the exact reason, but it appears that it was purposeful. This is a community that prides itself on being a safe place to live and work. We will come together for these families and help them through this terrible situation. In the meantime, the Seattle Police Department will be providing added security to all Synagogues and Temples in the city until further notice," said Seattle's mayor Greg Nickels in a statement.

Invayne, two things, First, this post is already elswhere on the board. Second, one idiot does not represent the whole religion. There are Jews that kill Muslims, and Jews that don't. Yes, it is. It's ALL about religion. They say Islam is a religion of peace. I say bullshit. You could actually say that terrorists didn't corrupt the religion of Islam, the terrorists have actually been corrupted by IT. Some people here have said Christianity corrupts the mind. Same thing...but the Bible doesn't preach going around and killing everyone that doesn't agree with it. The Qur’an is a declaration of war against all mankind, and the Hadith is a terrorist manifesto. Violent jihad is a everywhere in Islamic history, and many passages of the Qur'an and sayings of Muhammad are used by jihad warriors today to justify their actions and gain new recruits. No major Muslim group has ever repudiated the doctrines of armed jihad. The theology of jihad denies unbelievers equality of human rights and dignity, and it is a duty of every Muslim. Muslims have spoken of many things as jihads: the struggle within the soul, defending the faith from critics, even going into non-Muslim lands for the purpose of spreading Islam. They will not stop until the whole world is an Islamic state.

Invayne, have you ever read the Quran? I have. It makes clear that killing is not accepable, and that Allah respects the choices of people, even those who do not follow him.

Go back about 1500 years in history and you will see a few hundred years of peaceful Muslim rule. The Library of Alexandria contains many historical texts of those times, when the Arabian nations were the most advanced on Earth, and a student was often considered more important than a king, because education was so highly valued. A time when many cities were said to be lit 24-hours with coffee shops and intillectual debate forums.

This time, in European history, was known as the "dark ages". Europe was in religious turmoil under the popes, and education was left only to those with power. Warlords killed anyone for any reason they wanted, and fought over title and land constantly - in the name of Chirstianity, and using the Bible, out of contect, as their "guide". People that gained an education were often exiled or killed for teaching people other things than the "church" allowed.

There were round globes of the world in Arabia that included the Americas (under different names) in 1050. Europe refused to accept the world being round until the late 1400's. How did they find out? Some exploreres who had SEEN many of the Arabic maps told the Europeans about them. Many were killed. Some were exiled and went on exploring. Some were sent to prove it by curious monarchs - and of course most of those did prove it.

The point? ANY religigion can be misconstrued by those who want to use it to gain power over the uneducated, and want to keep them from being educated by claiming to be a holy voice and not allowing them to truly understand what they are believing in. The "Holy Catholic Church" did so. And now, for the past few hundred years, the "One Islamic Faith" has been doing so. It comes and goes in cycles, and in time, we will see the rise of educated, peaceful Muslims (as we have with Christians), and another peaceful religion will attract the power-mungers and mbe misconstrued to create fighting and killing.

I'd like to add that around the same time, Arabic nations introduced advanced mathematics such as algebra to the world and they also introduced(coming all the way from India and China) the number "0" to a backwards-roman-numeral-using, european empire. The numbers "1" and "0"(in the context of the Arabic "decimal" system(0-9)), gave rise to the binary counting system whereby all computers perform mathematical operations of ANY kind today.

their basic central-processor can only handle 1's and 0's and the human interfaces(programming languages and programs, themselves) require reinterpretation by the computer's pre-processing hardware(as well as compiling software) in order to translate a human-language into a more efficient, digital one. it is more efficient because if you leave the computer counting in 1's and 0's, it can be left up to each newer programmed interface to decide how it's own language should be reinterpreted.(who knows when we'll start using other or newer symbols to express ourselves?) it also takes less of an instruction set to describe a "1" and "0" than "0" through "9" all within one central processor. to sum it up, computer's think fast because they only know the difference between an absence and an existence.
We wouldn't have missile guidance systems, video, internet, or computers without the innovations of the Islamic-based Arabic nations around that time.

I heard on a special with "Bill Moyers", Martin Amis describe the difference between islam and a newer more violent fundamentalist reinterpretation of islam which began at the fall of the ottoman empire called "islamicism". It might be what this thread should be referring to. In which case, we also have "christianicism" and "judaicism" and "hinduicism" which all lead to "christianicide", "judaicide", and "hinduicide"(that last one sounds the most hilarious to me, too).

In any case, there was a(not so publicized) story last year about a group of jewish boys who bombed a baptist church in the midwest because, supposedly, certain christians in that church insulted judaism. Who's going to start the topic, "Fucking Jews"? No one is because they're scared of being compared to a nazi. We've got certain labels put into practice in order to KEEP us using certain other labels and avoiding still others.

maybe it's about time to start saying,"fucking humans" because each one COULD be proven to be as worthless(or as worthwhile) as the next.

Actually, it apparently is not all that clear that killing is wrong in the Qaran because a lot of people across the world are using it as a justification for not only killing but the killing of pretty much anyone they can find who doesn't look and act exactly like they do. In fact, there are quite a few passages I have heard cited by these idiots that seem to very clearly advocate killing people. Surely you have heard this stuff as well.

There are also quite a number of peaceful Muslims. The Whirling Dervishes of Sufism are a sect of Islam. The Black Muslims here in America don't seem to be killing let alone fighting for their rights anymore. And there are other Muslims right here in America AND all over the world who are quite peaceful and non-judgmental.
