Default Mulroney slams Trudeau

Say what you will... I know Trudeau was flawed and I know he treated the West like a blue dress... but personally I think Mulroney had ample opportunity to say this while Trudeau was alive... and it shows a lack of class to bring it up now when he's not here to defend himself. Trudeau hit the 80's conservatives hard... but he did it publically, on TV, while they were in power, not years after they were dead and burried.

Justin Trudeau's gonna kick Ben Mulroney's ass for this.

Mulroney slams Trudeau as lacking moral fibre to lead

I wouldn't judge Trudeau too much for his actions as a young whipper snapper. It still took balls to invoked the War Measures Act for the FLQ

Default Re: Mulroney slams Trudeau

Doc to tell you the truth I was a bit suprised by his comments. I mean we all know Mulroney has an ego and is thin skinned but I found it strange he would choose to insult someone who is dead and can not defend himself.

That said the allegation I also found a bit insincere from my Jewish perspective. when Mulroney bad-mouthed Trudeau he invoked the plight of Jews in the holocaust and inferred Trudeau did not care about Jews and/or was therefore sympathetic to what Hitler was doing.

Its a dangerous piece of history to try exploit to slag someone you feel you would hard done by.

Trudea during World War Two was in fact a rich, privileged, Upper Class snot, who sat the war out and was against forced conscription of Quebecers a sentiment favoured by many Quebecers at that time, in fact probably the majority of Quebecers who felt the war in Europe was a British colonial war.

I will always wonder, if Trudeau had the full facts as to the extent of the holocaust and what was happening would he have continued to be such an isolationist?

See its hard to know how much knowledge Trudea had of the autrocities going on. Maybe he knew, maybe he did not know. Maybe he knew a bit.

I mean it could be he was dead wrong and was in fact a privileged sheltered snot. It seems to me that is what it most appears like-that his privileged status caused him to look at the world quite selectively.

I don't like Mulroney using the holocaust or memory of Jews in this way to suggest Trudeau could care less about them. I am not sure that was the case.

I do think we can look back and say in hindsight Trudeau was naive and sheltered. He frankly admitted that in his memoirs and in his own self-analysis years later.

What we do know about Trudea who was my Member of Parliament, was that we Jews loved him as a leader and found him to be a good friend to us and respectful of us and very sensitive and caring to our culture. I think Trudeau was very popular with the Jewish community for the same reasons he was with so many minority communities-he genuinely respected people of ANY group. He was a genuinely open minded sensitive person to people's differences. That you can not fake.

I think that quality is something Mulroney never had. Mulroney was not a man who could walk through a crowd and have people admire him. Trudeau could walk into any crowd and any group and people would gush over him. Mulroney on the other hand did not have that quality. People instinctually were repelled by his smarmy charm which most of us felt was too insincere.

I think Mulroney has shown himself to be a jealous man.

Mulroney should have stuck to criticizing specific legal policies or opinions of Trudeau that conflicted with his and stayed away from the personal moral attacks and questioning of moral integrity.

As a Jew I think its absurd to suggest Trudeau did not care about us or the holocaust. It just defies the depth, sensitivity and respect he showed us.

Was he a moral coward for not fighting in world War Two when so many others his age died? I leave that to others to decide. I tend to be grateful to those who fought including so many brave French Canadians (who were often ridiculed by their fellow Quebecers) and prefer to thank them and focus on their good and brave deeds and leave the moral judgement to others.

As for Mulroney, history has shown he was a better PM then most thought but allowed coruption and patronage and allowed his ego to cloud his judgement.

I think Mulroney would do a better job protecting or promoting his legacy by showing some grace and dignity through tact and diplomacy in his retirement years. Unfortunately Mulroney has always been a street fighter, a tough gut level swearing, heaving drinking, heavy smoking, management side labour lawyer and bug business groupie. he is a man from very humble and simple beginnings who felt obliged to compensate by becoming a big tough abrasive aggressive red meat eating testosterone driventype A over-achiever. Its what made him a success and what also gives him his questionable qualities as well.

I hope he cools it down a bit for his own sake.

The only real criticism I have of him is his son Ben who has a big balloon head and drives me nuts on Canadian Idol with his teeth and spray hair and phony charm.

Hey Doc I am not sure Justin could kick Big Ben's butt. Have you taken a look at him? I think his wife Sophie wears the pants in that marriage and he borrows her dresses. Ben has quite a big head too while Justin's is much more narrow so I think Ben coudl head butt better.

Uh Justin looks more like a figure skater. Not that there is anything wrong with that! I just think if I was Justin I would let Sophie take care of it. She looks like she could handle herself.

I think Mulroney is an intelligent and classy guy, and I don't think he deserves the full extent of the hatred Canadians harbour for him... but he is twice the elitist Trudeau was and Trudeau is famous for his elitism. Trudeau just had enough pinnache to carry it off.

Both of them wanted to ram through constitutional changes, both of them wanted to save the country in a time of crisis. There are two differences. In Trudeau's time the crisis was evident to everybody and in Mulroney's time 75 percent of the country was entirely unaware there was a crisis. The second difference: Trudeau's Mulroney's cures were worse than the disease. He was myopic on Quebec and totally unconcerned on how the changes would affect other Canadians. Trudeau wanted Canada to change to make it more appealing to stay in. Mulroney wanted to shovel enough pork to make them happy... and there isn't that much pork in the world.
