Bush submits new terror detainee bill

U.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill.
According to the draft, the military would be allowed to detain all "enemy combatants" until hostilities cease. The bill defines enemy combatants as anyone "engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners who has committed an act that violates the law of war and this statute."

How can anyone justify throwing out the entire judicial process because of the nature of the crime? For centuries now, even mass murderers have had the right to a speedy trial in this country. Even people like Kenneth Lay get their fair day in court. Even total scumbags like the entire gang of Enron executives that raped thousands of worker pensions deserve a chance to defend themselves.

This makes zero sense. The nature of the crime (and these people are just criminals) has never made a difference in the process before. I see no reason to start now.

By the way, during WWII when Germans were found on the field of battle out of uniform they were lined up and shot. There is a huge difference between criminals and enemy combatants.

It's not an obsession. It's flat fucking wrong and he needs to go. Little by little Gerogie & henchmen have broken laws, re-arrranged laws, ammended laws and no one is doing squat about it. Little by little people sit back and allow the conversion of this country to unfold before their very eyes. Slowly you're being conditioned to accept the fact that your rights and freedoms are being stripped. And those who don't see it are plain ignorant or evil. Intraverted sheep. There aren't any soldiers in uniform, so I don't really see how these two are parallel.

I don't understand what shooting German army troops has to do with arresting American citizens and locking them up and not charging them with anything.

Were we referring to combatants at Gitmo? If so, they have met a much better fate than those in Germany.
