Re: What is poverty?
I have to agree with Ober on this one. Poverty is trying to live on an unlivable income. When talking about poverty you need to recognize that the definition of need is driven by the ontological nature of the group being analyzed. It is also important to remember that these needs are interactive (meaning affect each other) Subsistence, shelter, safety are the first (primary) needs affected by income, and whether you subscribe to Maslowe's theories or Neef's, you still arrive at the same conclusion: Poverty exists in America.

There is no real poverty because of the welfare system.

who the hell says that's where there is 'poverty' that we speak of?
You realize that 40% of the people that are on welfare are single parents?
That there is about equal amounts of poverty between whites, blacks, lations, and other?
You seem to discount any possiblity of there being institutional poverty.
Look at Gary Indiana. Used to be a big industrial town. Then its industry moved away, leaving it nothing. Not consequently, the town became one of the most crime filled towns.

I'll be sure to remember that next time I see a homeless encampment. "Hey guys?!? Move along now, you aren't living in poverty. Take your escalades and your cell phones and go back to your inner city projects... American Idol is on TV!"

Re: What is poverty?
or the fact that the majority of people in poverty are children.
or that fact that 40% of the people in poverty live in families with at least one parents working full time
or the fact that poverty is not just in the 'inner city', but also almost everywhere.
or the fact that poverty makes people dependant on themselves.
or the fact that Hitler built his facist regieme on the backs of the German poor
or the fact that huge amounts of people are in poverty due to disability, misfortune, or illness.
or the fact that people can be bred by the system to believe there is no real future
or the fact that we are one nation, under God, indivisible; and not just one nation for the wealthy, under God, indivisible
or the fact that an estimated 14 million Americans rely on food stamps to get food to eat, taking into account that no politician who undertook the 'food stamp challenge' could have lasted more than a week.
or the fact that direct cash handouts total less than 3% of 'welfare'; that most programs are aid tofamilies with dependant children, medicaid, etc.
or the fact that when work disapears, through 'the free market', people are often unable to get jobs in their town, thus making them flock to the 'big cities', increasing the burdens on those cities.
or the fact that poor people have less healthy lives, letting diseases spread far easier
or the fact that if kids grow up poor, more than likely they will stay poor, thus having a 'cycle of poverty'
or the fact that society ostracizes the poor who come to seek help by prying into their life and making them seem 'accountable'
or the fact that schools in poor districts are financed by property taxes
or the fact that the economy relies on the consumption and borrowing of people who cannot necessarily pay for their goods
i suppose none of these things means anything to those people who advocate that the poor should be left alone, and not dealt with, and that 'smaller government' is the way to go in domestic social policy. That if you cannot survive in the world, you should not be allowed to live.
