There are some very intelligent people out there who believe the best way to ensure peace is through technology sharing. One way to keep a cold war cold is to make sure all sides are equal and less likely to attack one another. Not saying that Churchill had this in mind, but it's a fairly logical school of thought.

Or here is another way of looking at it. If we were vastly superior, then the need for research and development of new weapons would not be necessary, therefore the military industrial complex would not have survived.

I'm confused, are we saying that we could possibly have military supremacy to the point that those aligned against us would fold and not develop any further military technology or that once we obtained a great militaristic lead over the competition, they would have no hope in matching us technologically?

Because so much money is given to military research. DARPA gave us the internet, GPS and jet engines because they have an annual budget in the billions and are given leeway to try all sorts of weird and wonderful ideas. If we put the same effort into developing peaceful technologies, there's no reason it wouldn't generate equally great inventions.
