Default Possible to Support the Troops but Not the War?

I always hear from certain people (even politicians) that they support the troops but not the war. To me, that seems impossible. Our troops are in the war whether these people like it or not. When a politician decides to say NAY to a bill that would give more money to the war, he isn't supporting our troops. That money (that goes to the war) also goes to our troops: armor, guns, bullets, etc. Our troops aren't over there on vacation, they're fighting a war. That is why I think it's impossible to support our troops and not the war.

However, I do believe it's possible for you to disagree with the war but support it at the same time. An individual can disagree with the war and protest if they want. The individual has a right to do that in this country and is free to do so. The individual can still disagree with the war while still supporting it.

An individual has three choices : a) Agree with the war and support the war (which would then support our troops). B) Disagree with the war and support the war (which would then support our troops). C) Disagree with the war and not support it (which would then NOT support our troops).

What say you Political Hotwire?

It's impossible to support both the troops and the war. If you support the troops there's certainly no way you'd want them dying for nothing in a desert cesspool.

I would say no...if you honestly support the troops you would force Bush to end the war...you would take to the streets and stay there until your government did what you wanted it to do...

Most people just don't give a crap one way or the other...its just rhetoric.

I agree wholeheartedly. If the war was a mistake (which it was) how could you possibly support the troops without wanting them home?

I support the troops in many ways. I will never ever support the Iraq war nor the war in Afghanistan.

Welcome to PH, first of all.

We've been over this more than once, but that's okay. It kind of evolves the further into the quagmire we go.

I've yet to hear anyone give a precise definition to "support the troops." If it means "support" like you might say, "I support Manchester United," then who really cares about whether you go in for that sort of rah-rah stuff or not.

And what is involved, exactly, in supporting a mission?

Ultimately, I always feel like this question, when asked by a hawk, is intended to pass judgment on the respondents as to their moral character. It's like hawks WANT to see troop spitting. They can't wait for it. In fact, you get the feeling they might go out and pay somebody to do it, just so they can say, "I told you so."

The truth? It's probably more a matter of apathy, but that's BOTH sides of the debate...on any given day, I don't believe hawks think about the troops anymore than doves.

SO...we should end it an everyone will be happy.

Those that support the Iraq War feel three or four lives are worth the sacrifice for oil supplies to our economy. Hell to them none of their suit and tie brethren are going, only "unimportant" people are combat troops.

I do support the Afghan war.

The war is considered to some illegal, and that has absolutely nothing to do with the troops...
