It could be you didn't like the assistant. My wife has kids with IEPs in her class. Some have paras. My wife is glad to have 'em, too. They're a big help to her.

Thomas did not believe the resurrection [John 20:25], and, as they say, would not believe without having ocular and manual demonstration himself. So neither will I, and the reason is equally as good for me, and for every other person, as for Thomas. [Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

Re: How Would You Reform Our Public Schools?
I would increase the availability of school vouchers and to hell with the objections of the teachers unions.

So I hope we're all proud of ourselves, sacrificing soldiers for a country that would send a man to prision for throwing shoes.

So you'd stick special ed students in classrooms with criminals?

No. But I would put them in seperate classes if they proved to be a distraction.

Re: How Would You Reform Our Public Schools?
The fundamental thing to do is stop regarding education as such a lowly influence at any age and make it the most important thing you can obtain in life. Make it the ultimate gift, achievement, and make it available to all equally. Of course I said I'm speaking fundamentally.
However we afford much more support for our local sports team than we do education and that is as well, fundamental. Perhaps if education was as much of an achievement as the benefit of it, it would be taken more seriously and perhaps it can gain its honorable status once again.
Basically what I'm saying is that the reform comes with us first, not just the systems in place that are either passing or failing. Sure they need work but our attitudes need more than just work, they need reform.

She's had seizures at her new school, but the kids there work as her "protector" and watch out for her. We learned from our daughter's first school experience that we simply needed to let the other kids know about her and that they'd then accept her.
The 30 minutes or so of class-time I took up on the 1st day of school three years ago is certainly a lot less disruptive than the every-day occurence of bullying and picking on someone perceived as "different."

Good for you! I wish others would take this kind of proactive approach with personal involvement.

That is not a just government, nor is property secure under it, where the property which a man has in his personal safety and personal liberty, is violated by arbitrary seizures of one class of citizens for the service of the rest.

My wife also as aids in her classroom. As does my son. We have seen that the aids often add more to the room and assist kids that technically they should not be involved with.

Re: How Would You Reform Our Public Schools?
I am a high school history teacher and assistant football coach in my 4th year of full time teaching.
Forty years old and I come from a family of teachers.
As far as public schools go, one of the best things that could be done is strictly enforce truancy laws by fining parents or legal guardians some serious money when the kids don't get to school.
I can tell you this, very few students fail in school because they can't make the grades. The vast majority fail because they miss too many classes. At some point, regardless of their grades, the school will mark them as "failed" if they have too many unexcused absences.
Make it cost some people at home some actual cash, and the kids will get to school alot more often.

I actually like the idea of school vouchers.
