However... isn't Spanish mandatory in school. Hasn't the government already paid to teach you to read and write Spanish? Or is it different state by state?

spanish wasn't mandatory for me, I graduated in 2000, it was mandatory if you wanted to attend a 4 year university college, hopefully it is mandatory to pass high school now because you'll need to know it in California, but you shouldn't have to. (that's my opinion)

Why? There are plenty of jobs that don't require a foreign language. I would switch industries if you don't speak Spanish.

why should I change? that's my whole argument, if you come to my country you should change, I should not have to change to accommodate you

Did I miss the law that says you can only speak English in America? You want to work in the trade you are in, then you play by the employers rules.

Of course there should be jobs solely for multilingual people - jobs which require you to speak more than one language. There are all sorts of jobs all over the world in non-English speaking countries which require at least some English; English being the most commonly used language in business transactions and the main lingua franca of the tourism industry (estimated to employ 10-20% of the entire world's population). If demographics mean you need Spanish for your job - then you need Spanish.

I agree with you that the US school system should be doing more to teach you languages other than English, though.

I'm not for illegal immigration but I'm still really interested in getting all the people who were born here to learn the language, let alone immigrants.
