Mellencamp Songs Off McCain's Playlist
Mellencamp Songs Off McCain's Playlist
Quote:
It may be "Our Country," but it's John Mellencamp's song.
When the liberal rocker found out his songs were being played at events for Republican John McCain's presidential campaign, Mellencamp's publicist sent a letter that questioned the campaign's playlist.
"Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain's efforts?" according to the letter sent to McCain's campaign on Monday. "Logic says that the facts might prove to be an embarrassment, were they to be circulated widely."
McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers in Washington, D.C., said Thursday that the songs would no longer be played. He declined to elaborate.
The letter explained Mellencamp was a liberal who had supported Democrat John Edwards, who recently dropped out of the race.
Publicist Bob Merlis said Mellencamp told him that the situation made him uncomfortable and he couldn't imagine McCain would want to be associated with him.
"You know, here's a guy running around saying, 'I'm a true conservative.'" Merlis told The Associated Press. "Well, if you're such a true conservative, why are you playing songs that have a very populist pro-labor message written by a guy who would find no argument if you characterized him as left of center?"
Mellencamp songs that had been played at McCain's events included "Our Country" and "Pink Houses." In "Our Country," Mellencamp sings, "There's room enough here for science to live, and there's room enough here for religion to forgive." In "Pink Houses," he sings about a simple man who "pays for the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill."
His other hits include "Jack and Diane," "Hurts So Good" and "Small Town." Mellencamp is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10 in New York.

If the bulk of the public were really convinced of the illegitimacy of the State, if it were convinced that the State is nothing more nor less than a bandit gang writ large, then the State would soon collapse to take on no more status or breadth of existence than another Mafia gang.

That's funny. Maybe McCain got the wrong impression from "Our Country" being used in the truck commercials during football games?

Tom Petty did the same thing for Bush. Edwards got to use it instead. I would take it as a compliment that someone like him didn't like my politics though. Didn't seem to help Edwards much or Bush much in the end did it?

Just wondering if anyone else thinks "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie wondered is a terrible campaign song.
"Like a fool I went and stayed too long" "I'm back and not ashamed to cry" "I've done a lot of foolish things that I really didn't mean, didn't I"?
Not really sending a presidential message, IMO.

Re: Mellencamp Songs Off McCain's Playlist
ya gotta remember. When McCain was developing his musical tastes, Bobby Darin was making hit music with his remake of "Mack the Knife". McCain has no idea who Mellenkamp was. ("Was" is the appropriate term for a has-been, right?)
For suitable theme music for the upcoming election, I'd recommend "Summer's Almost Gone", by the Doors (McCain's summer's so long gone, he's got to be getting close to spring again...), or "Forgettable", by Nat King Cole...oh, wait, that's "Unforgettable", never mind, it doesn't apply to McCain...
For Hillary there's clear unifying theme, recognizable by almost everyone, The Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street".
I'll have to figure out something for Obama later.

MYOB. - The key to liberty. Don't know MYOB? Leave me alone and mind your own business.
I'm a greedy selfish bastard, and damn proud of it.
You're not foolish enough to trust government, are you? Then think about this:
Since there isn't any corn on the cob, thanks solely to government interference, my kids have lost the freedom to eat corn on the cob on the Fourth of July this year.
What the hell kind of country are the socialists building here?

Poor McCain. He's a good man. First he got screwed by Bushie and his clowns, and now he's gettin' screwed again, by the right wing in his own party. What a dirty rotten business this politics is.

After McCain tried to screw this whole country over...

LOL a has-been? Cougar? No, far from has-been. Has-beens don't currently still get awards and inductions to Halls of Fame, which he is/has. He is though about as popular as a hooker in church with respect to the current music scene we have in this country.
