Top 5 things you consider when voting
Now be honest, these aren't the top 5 things an informed citizen of a dmeocracy ought to consider... it's the actual top five things you personally consider priorities when voting.
Myself:
1) Political Party. Now before you judge me on this, in Canada the legislature usually doesn't vote freely like in the US. The party gets as many votes as it has seats and the party votes as a unanimous block. Even if my local rep disagrees with his party, his vote is usually counted with the party whether he likes it or not. That and the party leader, even the Prime Minister can always be repalced by the party. Party is most important. 3 of the last 4 PM's have been unseated by their own party. (Don't laugh at that before thinking... Bush has what.. a 13 percent approval rating? here he would have been gone at 40%)
2) Personal History. Lawyer? legislator? Judge? Sports team owner? Or spoiled millionaire who never worked a day in his life? I want my officials to have been a worker, even if they were a $500 an hour consultant... they should have kicked ass at consulting and earned that $500.
3) Patriotism. I'm sure it would actually boost our economy to , oh say adopt the US dollar or cut deals with the Russians over the arctic. I want someone who's not even going to consider how much money we could cash in some soverignty for.
4) Looks. What can I say.? I've supported the liberals most of my life but the pasty-grey faced, weak chinned, kid-you-stuffed-in-a-locker, Party Leader for them now is NOT the guy I want on my grandkid's money (presuming they outlive Queen Elizabeth) He looks like he closes meetings and then goes online to play Dungeons and Dragons with Tucker Carlson.
5) Control over their Partry. There's no use voting for a guy I love if he's gonna be run circles around by his own cabinet. The guy should be a boss... not the highest ranking bureaucrat.
In summary. I am generally a liberal, left of centre kind of guy... but when this governmenr folds I'm going for the Conservatives. Harper meets 4 out of 5 of these and they're more important to me than homelessness, Olympic spending or the declining sperm count of the Atlantic Cod.
How about everyone else?

Re: Top 5 things you consider when voting
1. The degree to which the candidate has NOT ben absorbed by special interests.
2. I expect an utter lack of religion in their legislative thinking process.
3. I would prefer leaders to have killed with their bare hands to make them prudent about commiting troops abroad.
4. A candidate needs to be able to prove they have told the public, their associates, and superiors "I won't let you do that to yourselves because it's wrong you dumb ass morons"
5. If Rush Limbo likes them they are instantly disqualified.

Re: Top 5 things you consider when voting
Integrity. I want to know that the guy I'm voting for hasn't made his fortune breaking someone else, this would disqualify most lawyers.
Criminal record. Like Joe, I think a canidates criminal history is important, unlike Joe, I want a guy who's been around the block, and knows a good deal on a bag of sticky when he see's it.
Placment on voting machine. I don't like to vote with my left hand, and I have a thing about reaching across my body with my right. I will not vote for the guy on the left side of the machine, ever.
Pasty, or real black. I don't like white guys with the fake tans, and high yella black dudes friek me out.
Finally, jewlery. I don't mind earrings, I have one in each ear myself, but I don't like class rings, braclets, or gold chains. So Italians are out.

I apologize for getting all serious, some things I'm passionate about.

Re: Top 5 things you consider when voting
Integrity has to be #1 for me, since that is pretty important for any individual. The integrity has to be backed by more than just words though as some people believe they can portray their integrity by talking. I think integrity comes with experience to a degree so I can just go ahead an lump experience in here too.
Background, be it criminal or simply policy voting record. I am like Sparta in I'd like someone who has been around the block. I'd never hire a drug rehabilitation therapist who didn't understand what the druggies were going through and I'd never hire a drug czar who has no idea what is like to be a user.
Stance on issues. This is probably 3rd simply due to the fact that people change their minds and most issues aren't a one man show and require cooperation from many people to deal with.
Since Bush, since our recent 50+ year history, I'd say one thing that is very important is if this new election is going to bring more war. I understand it is a fact of life, but I think it doesn't have to be and its important that I know the new elected individual uses war as a last resort.
An educator. A very important issue is that hardly anyone likes to teach the ignorants new lessons and I find it important for candidates to explain themselves, their issues, and not sleep until everyone understands, agree or not. We as a nation have little time to be dumb about every little thing and it is important for those of us who have a life outside of politics to at least, without doubt, understand the position. So oratory skills are certainly a must.
One thing that doesn't matter whatsoever is the candidates alignment. Alignment is ridiculous and akin to team sports where someone is ALWAYS the loser. I'm not saying all democrat or republican ideas are good or bad, I'm just saying that we should all win since its about our country and not about shirts and skins.

Yea, Do you Barak Obama swear to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic and that you have gouged and clawed the life out of one of our enemies with your bare hands at one time or another? And swear to do so again and again if somebody messes with Yo-C?
