Conn. Student Suspended For Buying Candy In School
Michael Sheridan, a student at Sheridan Middle School, was suspended from school for one day, barred from attending an honors student dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president.
Officials say he was punished because he bought a bag of Skittles from another student.

I can't believe this stuff anymore. The public school system in this country has gone crazy.
For you people that want a National healthcare system, this is the type policies you have to look forward to. This is how the government regulates health.

Re: Conn. Student Suspended For Buying Candy In School
Candy is not allowed in school, policy clearly states this, and he bought candy. What's the problem?

Re: Conn. Student Suspended For Buying Candy In School
Do you think bringing candy to school merits a suspension, removal as class Vice President, and banning from the honors dinner he worked for the entire year?
where's the common sense in this? It was a bag of skittles.

Seems harsh, but if that was spelled out in the regulations and he went and did it anyway....don't know, the rules is the rules. Can't really get upset about them if they made them plain.

Used to be that you'd get your ass beat in front of the entire class for showing that level of disrespect for school policy.

Re: Conn. Student Suspended For Buying Candy In School
I think the intent of the policy is important. I didn't read in the article that candy was not allowed in school, I read that candy sales and fundraisers were not allowed. I am willing to bet was the intent was to stop any kind of larger candy sales.
Sparta, you live there, is candy in fact banned all together from the schools, and if so, why don't we read anything about the other kid being suspended?

Re: Conn. Student Suspended For Buying Candy In School
When you're driving down the road and read a speed limit sign that says 55 MPH and you're going 60, do you expect a ticket? You could get a ticket, and the officer has every right to give you a ticket, but do you expect a ticket for 5 miles over the speed limit?
What are we really trying teach our childern with a zero tolerance policy regading a HEALTH infraction involving a bag of skittles? I get the whole obey the rules, don't do stupid stuff in school thing, but does a HEALTH polciy infraction warrant suspension, removal of a class position, and....and a ban from the honors dinner? Don't you think maybe this is a little excessive for a bag of skittles and "health" program violation.
There's two questions you need to ask yourself when reading these all to familar stupid punishments in schools: 1. How would you really feel if it was your kid, 2. How would you feel if it was you? Now try to justify this policy.

Candy sales are prohibited in all Connecticut public schools allong with sodas and chips, it's a part of a "wellness" program designed to eliminate the promotion of sugars and garbage foods by the schools themselves. A student can bring candy to school, but the point is for schools to promote proper nutrition. As far as I know, all CT schools have adopted this policy.
The kid who sold the candy was also suspended.

You know, your post was interesting right up to the point where you tried and failed to relate the topic to a national healthcare system.
The policy under which the students were suspended was a LOCAL school policy. Not a state policy. Not a federal policy.
Update - as usual, I looked for a news source local to the story, and as usual, they had an article with far more information. I still don't agree with the decision, but when you read the actual details of the punishment, it's not as harsh as the OP article suggests (only one day of suspension, not three).
