Vote for the Greater Evil: the Other Option

I submitted an article the other day which I seriously doubt see will ever see the light of day.
One sentence summary. The economy is tanking so therefore vote for the greater evil in order to get rid of it.

The article was obtuse, more than average numerate and just plain hard to read. I can do better than that and I asked myself why didn't I? My answer is I really didn't want to say what I believe to be the truth: the American voting public is edging up to the Chthulu option or at least as close an approximation as it can stomach. To make this a non-joke article imagine yourself a 1930s screenwriter pitching these two ideas to a studio head about a future presidential election:

A corrupt sitting VP runs against a visibly drug addicted war hero machine politician. The war hero steals the election. I met Kennedy as a child and my parents pulled me out of the autograph line presumably because of his inebriation, Krushchev baited Kennedy about buying the 1960 election. None of this was a big secret at the time.

A president running for reelection is beaten by a star of B movies. The presidential fear of rabbits allows victory in a squeaker.

Does anyone believe that any of our presidents since 1980 (excepting Reagan's reelection) could have been elected in an earlier era? Clinton needed Perot in both of his elections. The current Bush had two opponents that gave semi-convincing imitations of being schizoid in their campaign speeches. Which brings us to the current crop:
Obama: Is on record for accepting a $14,000 gift from a political fixer and is under attack for being a racist. This is the odds on favorite to win.
Hillary: nuff said.
McCain: the poster child for PTSS.
W.A. Root is the leading candidate for the LP. "Vote for WAR the peace candidate". He has other problems and I support the candidacy of Phillies as LP nominee for reasons other than the obvious acronym difficulty but still as a lifetime libertarian I wonder about libts who support this guy. Haven't they ever heard of "Saturday Night Live"?

Chthulu would fit right into this group if he were a natural born American citizen. Keep in mind this is not a joke article. The current crop of candidates do not rise to the level of McKinley vs. Bryant in 1896 and that is a very low bar to get over. It is in fact the former all time low point of American presidential politics. On the democratic side Biden and Richardson both had better records than the two Dems still in the race.

What the hell is going on? That is not a rhetorical question.
