Default Deja vu all over again

Back in 1968, on the eve of the Olympics in Mexico City, up to 200 (or more by some reports) student protestors were gunned down by authorities.

Quote:
Mexico's tragedy unfolded on the night of October 2, 1968, when a student demonstration ended in a storm of bullets in La Plaza de las Tres Culturas at Tlatelolco, Mexico City. The extent of the violence stunned the country. When the shooting stopped, hundreds of people lay dead or wounded, as Army and police forces seized surviving protesters and dragged them away. Although months of nation-wide student strikes had prompted an increasingly hard-line response from the Diaz Ordaz regime, no one was prepared for the bloodbath that Tlatelolco became. More shocking still was the cover-up that kicked in as soon as the smoke cleared. Eye-witnesses to the killings pointed to the President's "security" forces, who entered the plaza bristling with weapons, backed by armored vehicles. But the government pointed back, claiming that extremists and Communist agitators had initiated the violence. Who was responsible for Tlatelolco? The Mexican people have been demanding an answer ever since.
I got to go to work, but here's some info if anyone's interested.

Tlatelolco Massacre, October 2, 1968

Did we not see the problems with the Chinese hosting the Olympics coming?

The security for these events is hard for any country, but an oppressive one is bound to have big trouble.

Or is it part of the reason we let them do this, knowing the issues of their government would be put in the world spotlight?

By many people's accounts, the Tlatelolco incident actually led to reforms and eventually a democratic government in Mexico.

Could giving the Olympics to China being the world's way of forcing their hand, knowing how they would react to protests?

Maybe we are hoping the government of China behaves badly here, as an international incident might provide the catalyst for change that otherwise wouldn't happen.

Just a theory.

I did, no different than the Nazi's hosting the Olympics.

Given the date and the event and the upcoming DNC and the trouble that I believe will occur, your title could not be more correct.
