Why? Why you ask? Is that really even necessary? I mean they have everything you need to win.
For example:
Pitching: Matsazuka
Wakefield
Lester
Beckett
Bucholz
and Schilling when healthy.
That is the best starting rotation in baseball. Not only are they good, they have the benefit of confidence after being champions last year and they are fearless. They go after hitters. They will not cower to intimidating lineups that the Tigers and Yankees have to offer.
Out of the bullpen they throw Okajima, Del Carmen, Tavarez and Corey at you. The middle relief may not be the best in the game, but they are just plain good. And once again they will dare you to beat them. They are not intimidated.
Then you have Papelbon. He is Mariano Rivera incarnate. He is the best closer in baseball today. Throwing upwards of 100 mph he hinges on being unhittable. Pitching wins championships and Boston has the best pitching staff hands down.
And, if that wasn't enough Look at their lineup:
Pedroia 2b
Youklis 1b
Ortiz dh
Ramirez lf
Lowell 3b
Drew rf
Varitek c
Crisp cf
J. Lugo ss
With the luxury of Casey, Ellsbury, and Cora on your bench.
That is not the most intimidating lineup in baseball, the Tigers have that, but I believe is has the two most intimidating hitters in the game with Big Papi, and Ramirez.
You can argue all you want, but a repeat is a done deal for the Red Sox, you might as well not even play the games.
Congratulations Boston.
Oh, and you can say look at their record, but having already traveled to Japan, Anaheim, Toronto and now back home, they have logged more miles than most teams will the rest of the month and to come out of that in second place playing against the level of competition that they have played just further validates my point.

Looks like we need to update what makes the Red Sox the best team in MLB.
Add the pitching of Masterson and Colon. Two bargain basement guys who have beaten the odds to get healthy, and Masterson's record is 3-0, While Colon is a 4 game winner, two pitchers you didn't even figure in to your OP.
Who would have believed that with Ortiz, Curt and Dice-k on the DL, the sox would go 7 of 10, and lead the AL East? Probably everyone, if I told them that JD Drew would hit 324 in to June with a slugging percentage of 562!
5 Sox have 10 home runs or more, with a 6th player knocking in 7.
Last night we were playing 4 rookies at one time (counting the pitcher, 5 played in the game), and theyre all good. One has a no no under his belt, one is going to the allstar game, and one leads the league in steals.......as a PART TIME PLAYER.
Now what do you have to say?
