The Republican and Democratic parties before 1920 bear little resemblence to thier counterparts of today. One great example were the Dixiecrats on up to 1970, George Wallace was the last of that kind. Yellow Dog Democrats from the south all militant over segregation. Those folks are now red states Republicans who are bitter and have guns. (kidding)
Actually what happened is those dixiecrats from George Wallace's time are mostly dead. Those people did not morph into new younger people. George Wallace later in life became a born again Christian and renounced his activities during the Alabama segregation era. Even still he did not suddenly become a Republican.

Well he renounced his activities during the segregation era cause he knew he would be dying soon and wanted to be sure he would make it into heaven. Maybe thats also why he did not suddenly become a republican.
