I would feel hypocritical, I am not sure that I could. The wife and I talked about it but we both came to the conclusion that we will wait until the last possible moment. Kirsten starts kindergarten in Sept, things are about to get more costly.

No kids in school. I don't tangle with the law. I pay taxes.
I do drive on the roads, so I owe the highway department but I also think Federal Excise Tax on gas pays that.
I give those fuckers way more than they give me.

Wow I thought our taxes paid for that and gas taxes pay for the upkeep. I had no idea that the roads were a gift from the government!

Nothing to do with 'a gift from the government', we pay for that stuff for a reason, much like food stamps and WIC, we deem it valuable enough as a society. Pretty much everyone needs it at one point or another. As hard as they are to properly managae, it's good to know they are there.
FAFSA payed for $300 (Kaching!) of school last year, The VA paid for a semester of community college a few years ago, I went to public school 2nd through 10th, when I dropped out to work full-time (And pay taxes).
When my dad left when I was 2, my mom was on something for a few months, not sure what, probably food stamps or welfare.
I played town youth league sports and was in Boy Scouts for a few years, I believe both of those are subsidized in some way, though there were fees.
I enjoy parks, forests, and public beaches.

Re: Fess up, how much do you drain off the state?
That was the prupose of the question Michaelr - to thinkabout how much tax money you actually benefit from - and if it's worth it in the end.
I've even thought of more. I had a part time job in university that was funded by the city. I did it for 5 summers.
Everyone I know, including me and my kid, got immunizations that are both required by and paid for by the feds.
I worked a few weeks in a library shelving books.

No I understood the comment well, I just have an issue with it. Education is a good place to start. We pay for the dept of education from the US general fund, then we pay the local school district from our property taxes. You see the government pays nothing at all. I would like to see the dept of ed shut down but that is for another thread.

I'm genuinely confused.
I call the department of education, the US general fund, the local school district AND property tax collection The Government. It's tax money and it's either elected officials or beurocrats appointed by elected officials using it right? It's public money which comes from taxes.
I'm using "the government" to mean all levels of government from county to state/Provincial to federal to the FDA to the Post Office. Just a collective "The Government"

Well I agree, we paid for the roads, the comment that I responded to made it sound like it was a gift.
Our property and sales taxes pay for the parks, federal parks are paid from the general fund. I am an avid hiker and pay for park passes year around.
Your VA education was a part of your pay for your service to this nation, a small price I would add. I also used my GI benefits for education ad do not feel bad for it.
I worked with the scouts foe 9 years as an outdoor activity counselor, we had fund raisers and the church helped, I would be hard pressed to think there were any federal funds involved, but that would also be above my pay grade(volunteer).
