I don't like all genres of rap but there is hip hop that is pretty good. It usually positive and has some pretty interesting music to accompany it. Being a musician I am pretty biased though.

A always assumed that it began during an unfortunate incident involving barbiturate overdose and grand mal seizure occurring in a prison for violent sex offenders.

What the hell is rap "music?" Noise is never music.

I'll say this too, if more people listened to the old school rap and took a message from it there would be less dickheadery in the world. The constant theme is about respecting other people or facing the consequences, everyone needs a little street in their lives.

I agree Sparta. Most of the old school rap I listened had a positive message. Not long ago, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five was inducted to the rock and roll hall of the fame. Their biggest rap hit song, "The Message"
Quote:
Last night at the Waldorf-Astoria, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who proved that hip-hop was more than party music with their 1982 hit “The Message,” became the first hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
When Melle Mel, the rapper on “The Message,” stepped up to speak, he urged the music executives in the audience to “make hip-hop the culture that it was, instead the culture of violence it is right now.”

Re: Was this the beggining of Rap Music?
I didn't believe in musical hatred, and there are lot's of rap songs I like. It has had a big effect on Rock N Roll too. Like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, The first..Faith No More. Then there is out and out white rappers like Eminem, The Beastie Boys, and many many others.
The reason I force myself to take a non prejudicial look at rap is because The Blues was another form of Black music shunned by whites as noise. But people like Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry inspired Buddy Holly and Elvis
Credit where credit is due folks!
