Actually everywhere but between numismatic and bullion value almost no one uses it as such. A $20 US gold coin (value well north of $1200 in very poor condition for any year) can be used to pay any $20 debt. In some countries, Russia being the biggest exception, the unofficial numeraire is another metal such as platinum or silver but gold coins are accepted.
At current prices $1 meg bullion weighs about the same as $1 meg in 100s. A bit more than 60 lbs each. Drugdealers have not yet switched to gold but it is coming.
