BUT, his friend defended him: With the exception of the cross-burning episode, I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the mt Vernon school district.

Freshwater told investigators he simply was trying to demonstrate the device on several students and described the images as an "X," not a cross.

The parents' opinion bit counts for nothing. It's open and shut, he deliberately burnt his pupils. If he did it as a cross that's even worse, but nonetheless, he deliberately burnt his pupils. It's pretty hilarious he's even appealing. If I were him I'd be so embarrassed I'd be wondering whether fleeing to the other side of the world would be far enough to grant me a new life.
