Would they really need a long-range bomber to perform a surgical strike against Iran? There are very few points in Iran that are more than 1500 miles from Israel. And they're talking about surgical strikes; not carpet bombing. That means much less ordinance.

You are a friggin dreamer. We discovered the bomb some 65 years ago and since then Russia, China, Britain, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel have developed them. Are you really niave enough to think in another 50 years that there will not be more added to that list? Unless we intend to use them, we are not going to prevent others from develping them.

Hardened sites requires much heavier ordinance. Also Iranian anti-air Defense is very tough and fear of it indirectly derailed the hostage rescue mission during the Carter administration. It has been upgraded and was heavily tested in the Iraq-Iran war. If I was the Air attack planner my first action would be to go to the head and hurl. It would take six months of battlefield preparation to make that kind of strike work with American resources and the prep time just doesn't exist. Going in and finding out that there are radar/lidar systems not in the planning books means a lot of people will die.

Are you really niave enough to think that our efforts to stop people from having the bomb in the last fifty years has not kept many countries from having it?

Sure it has, I'm not saying it hasn't. I think we should always try and convince others not to develop them. I am saying that waging wars for the simple reason we don't want someone else to get one is not going to work. If they are hell bent on developing one they will and if we give them good reason to (like we are doing with Iran) you can guarantee it will happen.

We have never waged war for that reason.

Oh you mean Iraq. Well that was only one small part of the reason. You know that though.
