If you can do that and the seller sells for that price then you make out the seller makes out and Ebay makes out everybody wins. I do like the way half.com operates though. I sell textbooks there and the buyer pays half.com directly and then half.com pays me. The only downside is I have to wait for my money, they only pay twice a month.
And that's REALLY the point. If you know how an auction works you go in with a price ceiling. Do your research and find out what the item is really worth. Then decide what YOU are willing to pay for that item and stick to your price range. When you hit the price ceiling- stop bidding.

Simple, no?

PhilipCohen Who is this person?

You forgot to add that, regardless, whatever you are prepared to pay, you should “snipe”, because if you lodge you maximum bid early, a shiller can apparently push you up until they outbid you and then withdraw their last bid (with some ridiculous excuse) so that you are again the highest bidder but you pay the highest amount you were prepared to pay regardless of whether or not there was another genuine bidder.
Not a bad trick, eh?
Certainly, “nibble” bidding is now only for shill bidders and naive fools.

If you are willing (and stupid) enough to pay $40 for something that's only worth $10 (brand new) then shilling isn't the real problem here.

Only if it's a pile of dog vomit shaped like Jesus will I bid higher than $5.

Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
