She's coming. Watch out. She's a neat lady, by the way, I have had the privilege of talking with her on Messenger. Bright, funny, smart, and intuitive. I find her views quite thought-provoking, as I find all of yours too, and you all do make me THINK. I am glad to be here with you, and watch out for this one. She is going to rock the world, I think. For the better! YAY!

America
"The United States of America" was the first independant nation on the continent to name itself after the location where it is. At the time, it was a coaltion of thirteen sovereign states that allowed (and still do allow) any other states on the continent to join in these United States of America. I think it is reasonable, being the only nation with America in its name, to call itself American. It has done so since the day the Decleration of Independance was proposed on June 5th, 1776. Even the other countries around the world called the coalition knows as the United States of America "Americans".
So now, after nearly 250 years, we are to stop calling ourselves "Americans" simpply because states that don't want to join the union want the name for themselves, even though the name is not in their state names? And they get confused when "Americans" are referred to, even though the world (including countries of South and North America) has been calling the US "America" for 200+ years?
That is like me getting confused in San Diego when the news refers to "Baja, California". I never get confused - I know that Baja, California is in Mexico, and that San Diego, CA is in the US. Anyone who knows how the world refers to various countries will not be confused by the use of the terms "Americans" - especially not as far North as Michigan.

Well, you got a point David. But I guess all of us on the continent could call ourselves Americans, really. Still, I think that's nuts!
Interesting points here.

Well, I was never planning to go to Michigan before this and don't plan on going there at all now. Well, maybe I will stop by a social studies class wearing a tshirt that says, YES I am an AMERICAN. I wonder if I'd get arrested??

I was raised in Michigan
My Pop still lives there, I played hockey through high school. Spent my winters ice fishing in a shanty and racing snow mobiles, hunting white tail deer, And of corse, playing hockey.
Played guitar in a garage band, worked on cars. Life was good. Michigan is a cool state.

It's kind of odd. My students from Brazil, Argentina and Mexico were always confused when someone said American. The word means North and South American for them... it's like one day Germany calls itself Europe... and then makes fun of the rest of Europe for using what is "clearly" the name of their country.
Then you get Canadians who would punch you in the face if you called them American.
Whattaya gonna do?
Come to think of it, it's kind of silly to call Mexico NORTH America.. its near the freakin equator
